Sotheby’s is one of the world's largest auctioneers of fine art, decorative art, jewelry, antiquities, and collectibles. An icon in the art business, the famous auction house is known all over the world for its fine art auctions and private sales, often setting auction records, and representing high-profile sales such as David Bowie’s personal art collection and John Lennon’s Austin Princess Limousine Hearse.
In order to have the luxury of representing some of the world’s most coveted items, Sotheby’s first prepares proposals for each potential item for sale. Each unique proposal outlines the collection using marketing collateral, catalogs and ads, and photography to showcase the pieces for sale. The collateral is presented in a proposal box designed to each client or consignor.
The Sotheby’s standard proposal case is a 9 7/8 " x 12 ¼" x 3" hinged box, designed to house all printed materials and an iPad if applicable. Designed internally at Sotheby’s, the box was put into place in 2007 as a way to eliminate the need to make completely custom boxes for each proposal. The Sotheby’s design team — Sandra Burch, SVP, Creative Director, Beth Lin Garland, Senior Designer, Stephen Stanger, Senior Production Manager — and New Jersey-based Walden Lang came up with this solution, which has been used since its initial design.
The team chose Neenah® Box Wrap METAL-X®, Silver in a Brush finish because it matched Sotheby’s brand colors, it’s durable and easy to clean, and the embossing had a true metal-like appearance that added an extra level of luxury to the presentation.
