What Neenah papers are laser and ink jet printer guaranteed?
The following Neenah papers in Writing & Text weights are laser and ink jet guaranteed:
How do your "laser imaging papers" handle the following: foil stamping, engraving, embossing, cover weights, static, trimming and overall solid coverage printing?
Our recommendations are as follows:
What papers do you have that are acid free?
The majority of Neenah’s papers are acid free, with the exception of some specialty papers. Please contact customer service for more information.
What are the aging characteristics of your paper?
All of our acid free papers are generally stated to comply with type 1 permanence on the basis of pH and alkaline filler. This means that paper is expected to last several hundred years. Experience and historical samples indicate that the vast majority of acid sized sheets not meeting the above permanence will last 50–100 years.
What are the general procedures for avoiding cracking when folding writing, text and light weight cover papers?
We recommend scoring and folding with the grain when possible. Occasionally, a lighter score (a shallow score) is recommended over a heavy score (a deep score). The lighter score, when folded, will have the tendency to resist cracking.
How do you score and fold cover, duplex cover or double-thick cover papers?
Because of the bulk and stiffness of heavy weight covers and laminated covers, care must be taken when scoring and folding to avoid fiber cracking or lifting on the fold(s).
GENERAL GUIDELINES:
Pretesting is always recommended to determine the ideal creasing rule/channel combination.
When scoring a 100 lb. or heavier presentation folder, a double score, which creates a gusset for the spine, is helpful particularly when the folder has numerous insert sheets.
Consider lighter screen tints or eliminate ink coverage altogether over score areas to minimize highlighting of paper fibers along the fold, especially when scoring against the grain. This is particularly important to consider on highly textured finishes and double thick cover papers.
In what direction does the grain run in relationship to the pattern on CLASSIC® Woodgrain, CLASSIC COLUMNS® and CLASSIC® laid papers?
The grain direction of CLASSIC® Woodgrain and CLASSIC COLUMNS® is parallel to the pattern. The grain direction on our CLASSIC® Laid is perpendicular to the laid pattern.
Can Neenah’s papers handle special printing processes such as embossing, foil stamping, engraving, etc.?
Most of Neenah’s papers take special printing processes very well. Refer to “printing tips” on each particular brand’s landing page for detailed instruction and tips.
What are ink drying qualities of your papers?
This is a very broad question. It is best to remind your printer that our papers are premium uncoated papers with excellent printing characteristics. If a printer should have any questions regarding drying they should supply paper samples to their ink representative for recommendations. We do not recommend any particular brand of ink. Recommendations for each specific paper can be found in “printing tips” on each brand landing page.
Do your paper colors match Pantone® Colors?
No. Each color is unique to our own "recipe" and has been manufactured to enhance the application of inks, foils, engraving inks, thermography and digital printing.
What information can we have on caliper, brightness and opacity of your paper?
This information can be found under “stock list guide” on each specific brand landing page.
What are Neenah's finished paper trimming tolerances?
Trimming tolerances for Neenah text and writing papers are realistically established on a basis which will provide customers with paper cut as closely as possible to the ordered size. The mill practice for cutting is as follows:
Sheets sizes of 11 x 17" or smaller are targeted 1/32" oversize, 0" undersize. Sizes larger than 11 x 17" are targeted 1/16" over the ordered size, plus or minus 1/32" from target, 0" under.
What is a private watermark?
A private watermark is a personalized image or mark in a sheet of paper that is visible when the finished paper is held to the light or placed on a flat surface.
Neenah offers both genuine watermarks produced with a traditional dandy roll, imparted during the paper making process and Customark® an innovative process that makes it practical to order high-quality watermarked papers in smaller quantities.
GENUINE PRIVATE WATERMARKS
Genuine watermarks are available in three types: Wire, Shaded, Combination
Wire: For a wire mark, the design is raised on the dandy roll cover. The raised mark then presses into the fibers and displaces some of the paper fibers. In comparison to the surrounding area, the watermark appears more translucent.
Shaded: A shaded mark is pressed into the dandy roll cover. When the fibers flow into the depressed area of the design, that area becomes more opaque than the surrounding area of the sheet.
Combination: This design uses a combination of the wire and shaded marks.
Genuine Watermarks are also offered in several positions: Refer to “Private Watermarks” under Paper 101 in the resources section on our website
What is the minimum amount of paper I need to order?
The minimum order is 5,000#.
How long does it take to receive my watermarked paper?

CUSTOMARK® PRIVATE WATERMARKS
Customark is produced through our exclusive off-machine process allowing you to order in much smaller quantities. The watermark mimics a shaded mark as described above. We have several finishes and a range of white papers available for you to choose from.
What is the minimum amount of paper I need to order?
The minimum order is 600#.
How long does it take to receive my watermarked paper?

Which Neenah papers are guaranteed for digital printing?
Our universal digital finish is guaranteed to perform on all digital presses including HP Indigo® presses. Many of our brands have digital offerings allowing you to choose from a wide range of smooth and textured finishes, choice of basis weights and colors. Refer to the digital section on our website for detailed information and offerings.
Which digital printing press manufacturers have substrate certification programs?
HP has an established official certification programs with Rochester Institute of Technology Printing Applications Lab.
What quality can I expect if I use a paper in a digital printing press that isn’t certified for that press?
Most paper manufactures, including Neenah, choose to certify selected colors because each colored substrate is a separate certification trial. Once one color is certified, there is a high probability that other colors in that brand will have similar runnability because mechanical properties should be affected only slightly, if at all, by the presence of dyes and pigments. However, varying color substrates will change the ICC color profile settings against Pantone targets. If varying the weight, refer to the equipment manufacturer’s specification sheet for optimal limits. Neenah encourages testing paper on your particular device. Samples are available from our sample department.
What are typical sizes for digital printing presses?
12x18, 13x19 Text and 18x12,19x13 Cover are the most common sizes for uncoated paper. The newer printing press models from HP are now accepting larger sheets sizes such as 20.75 x 29.5. As demand for these sizes grow, Neenah Paper will consider adding on to our assortment. Most digital presses will also accept sheet sizes smaller than 12x18 and 13x19, such as 8.5x11 and 11x17.
Explain the differences between digital printing presses?
HP Indigo uses liquid ink technology and Kodak and Xerox presses use dry electrophotographic technology (toner based). For a comparison of digital presses please refer to the manufacturer’s website.

What is a deckle edge envelope?
A deckle edge envelope has a feathered edge along the flap edge of the envelope.
Are your envelopes laser guaranteed?
No, after folding, glue, and the conversion process, we cannot guarantee laser performance. Please contact the converter you work with for more technical information on the envelopes.
Does grain direction matter when choosing envelopes?
Not usually; an envelope converter will make every effort to get the most out of the sheet.
What colors do you recommend using for mailing purposes?
For more information on postal requirements and restrictions, refer “mailing guidelines” under Paper 101 in the Resources section of our website or refer to the United States Postal Service web site.
Is it difficult to print on uncoated paper?
No, it is not! Remember that uncoated papers are more absorbent than coated papers, and printing images have to be prepared in prepress differently to accommodate the absorbency of uncoated papers.
Can you print 4 color process successfully on your white and colored papers?
Absolutely! Uncoated papers dry by absorption, which mean that images printed in 4 color process must be compensated for the resulting absorption process and dot gain when printing halftone and 4 color process. As a general rule, imagery should be adjusted in prepress to compensate for the additional 5-15% tone value increase that will occur. The precise amount of under color removal is image specific. Total area coverage should not exceed 320%. From natural white papers, to grays, blues, greens, fiber-added papers, to even some of the deep colors, 4 color process images take on a new dimension when printed on these papers.
Compared to coated papers, why should uncoated papers be chosen for 4 color process printing?
Uncoated papers have a natural, tactical, textural feel, with a matte finish; unlike the glossy, reflective finish of some coated papers.
What line screens are recommended for printing on your papers?
We recommend 175 line screen for our papers. However, your printer is your best resource.
Can metallic inks print well on your papers?
Yes. Our papers take metallic inks beautifully. Drying times may be slightly longer.
How can I prevent ink mottle when I print large solid areas on uncoated papers?
Excellent formation of the sheet is most important to avoid ink mottle and Neenah papers are known for their excellent formation. The next consideration is the ink lay down sequence of the solid ink application. An ink lay down sequence is where the solid ink is being applied, or what unit on the press the solid ink coverage is being applied. Solid ink coverage should be the last ink down on the press, or placed as closely to the end as possible. This will prevent the subtractive tendency of successive units of color from "taking ink away" or disturbing the smooth lay of ink already printed.
What are ink drying qualities of your papers?
As with all uncoated papers, you should expect and therefore compensate for a dry back of 5-7 points.
What are some other print production advantages of your papers over other papers?
Our papers offer a wide variety of colors, weights, and textures. Our colored papers are beater dyed meaning the color of the paper is embedded into each fiber, so when folding or die-cutting, a white edge isn’t visible as it is if you were to print the color onto a white sheet. Our papers can also handle every specialty print technique such as embossing, foil stamping, thermography, engraving, letterpress, die-cutting, and UV coatings to name a few.
