The Governor's Ball is an exclusive celebration that takes place after the Emmy Awards to celebrate both the nominees and the television industry. Attendees take home a highly coveted basket of special gifts from the world’s top brands. Each year, one luxury keepsake item is selected to be presented at each place setting.
Over the past decade, Craig Chrisman, Vice President of Prestar Packaging, Inc. has had the privilege of designing and producing the luxury gift packages for the place settings for three separate Governors Ball dinners.
The most recent design was for the top event sponsor, Dove Chocolates. The custom-made boxes held four new signature chocolates that were being launched by Dove on the evening of the Emmy Awards.
The process for creating the packaging, Chrisman says, involves designing and manufacturing a custom package from the ground up. Because the packaging must perfectly fit the item being featured as part of the place settings, it is very important to maintain the design criteria created and enforced by Emmy guidelines while at the same time elegantly presenting the sponsor’s product.
Chrisman’s go-to box wrap for each of the three Emmy packages he has designed have been specified from the Neenah® Box Wrap portfolio. This particular box was produced with Neenah® Box Wrap, Silktouch Nuba, Black to give the package a luxuriously soft feel. A hand-applied, 4-color process, UV coated, domed resin encased emblem added to an extensive silver foil stamp, completing the old Hollywood look he was striving for.
One challenge that comes with packaging chocolates is the melt factor. “Dove actually shipped the candy bars to our facility. It was August and the temperature outside was in the mid 90’s. We had to crank down the temperature in our plant to 60 degrees to make sure the bars did not melt. Once we made the boxes and then inserted the candy bars, we shipped the completed product back to Hollywood on refrigerated trucks,” said Chrisman.
For his work on the box, Chrisman received a sweet surprise of his own in the form of several package design awards for the Dove box as well as the two other package designs he worked on for previous Governors Balls.
