My Cart
“When I was thinking about designing a Fathers Day card, I of course immediately thought about my dad and the imagery and feelings associated with him.” Nicholas Moegly
Moegly, an illustrator, lettering artist and graphic designer is one of the 12 designers Neenah asked to create a unique card for its A Year’s Worth of Greetings promotion.
Moegly’s father is part of a big German family that was raised on their father’s hog farm in Cincinnati. “I remember as a kid going to my grandparents house and seeing my grandpa’s garage and workbench. He had old tools and sports equipment everywhere. Now my dad’s workbench is exactly the same, kind of a controlled clutter with tools, fishing rods, golf equipment, and other things filling the space,” said Moegly.
Though Moegly’s Father’s Day card design is an ode to his own dad and grandfather, he sees the concept as universal, “I think everyone’s dad had/has that garage, shed or basement that’s taken over by their hobbies.”
Moegly says he based the design’s color palette off of old Sailor Jerry designs because the ROYAL SUNDANCE®, Ivory paper he chose for the design was the perfect shade to make the colors, and the card, look slightly aged.
“When I saw the Royal Sundance, Ivory color it immediately reminded me of the yellowish tone that paper turns when it’s decades old. That vintage inspiration gave me the idea to illustrate an old fashioned scene reminiscent of your grandfather’s garage workbench,” said Moegly.
Moegly’s second card design was inspired by a message he wanted to send to himself, “The idea to make a thank you card came from the thought I often have, which is that I think people don’t express gratitude to each other enough. We say it in a simple reactionary way when someone holds a door open or checks us out at a store, but I don’t think we take the time to really say it fully to people we’re close with. It’s a simple thing that’s free to do and it can mean so much to someone. I don’t do it enough myself, so this card is meant to give me a swift nudge to take some time and send out some meaningful thank you messages to people that have helped me along the way.”
As an artist who does gold leaf signage on windows, Moegly says he’s always loved the look, “I knew I wanted to do something with gold foil to make the cards really stand out, and the new ROYAL SUNDANCE®, Brilliant White paper is perfect for making the gold pop and creating a clean and elegant design.”
All 24 cards and envelopes in A Year’s Worth of Greetings feature papers from the refreshed and re-released ENVIRONMENT® and ROYAL SUNDANCE® Papers. These two established brands now work side by side within one portfolio: The Naturals.
