The Right Paper
In February of 2019, Emory College’s Goizueta Business School celebrated its centennial in grand fashion. The Goizueta Centennial Gala was an exclusive black-tie affair, designed to be a landmark event to lay the foundation for the school’s future while honoring the institution’s last 100 years. Hundreds attended, including the school’s namesake and former CEO of Coca-Cola, Roberto C. Goizueta.
The exclusivity and significance of this event could not be conveyed simply through an email invitation. Ideas United, the creative studio charged with planning the event, collaborated with Craig Graphics to design a formal invitation that would awe and captivate recipients — an invitation that would itself create a landmark moment.
Craig Graphics approached Atlanta-based specialty print shop Henry + Co to produce the elaborate invitations. Jonathan Hulsey of Henry + Co said, “When Craig Graphics came to us with this project they’d already had two local printers turn the project down. This was such a unique piece to produce. It had a combination of foil stamping, debossing, die cutting and hand assembly.”
Hulsey specified Neenah CLASSIC CREST®, Patriot Blue,100lb Cover for the project because it’s a versatile, high-performance paper that he knew would handle the various production techniques. “We were working with multiple types of finishing work, fold thicknesses, and areas where the movement of the piece requires the foil to rub directly against the paper, so we needed a paper that could hold up to these processes,” said Hulsey.
The body of the card is duplexed as a way to mask the bruising from the foil stamping and debossing and keep it from distracting from the design. Hulsey said, “The biggest hurdle was figuring out how to achieve the perfect alignment with foil stamping across all of the various moving parts in this piece.”
The camera shutter-style wings inside the piece had to be hand-aligned and applied individually as separate pieces, requiring very meticulous attention to detail and placement. “The design required keeping all of the patterns and artwork in alignment from one level to another, giving it a seamless flow. The handwork alone on this piece took approximately 10-15 minutes per piece, and we produced over 600 pieces,” said Hulsey.
Neenah CLASSIC CREST®, Patriot Blue,100lb Cover was also specified for the custom built envelope. Hulsey said, “We needed something that would go through the mail and protect this beautiful, hand-built card. The moment they took the envelope out of the mailbox, the color, weight, and structure of it let them know this was a prestigious piece of communication.”
