Letterpress printing is enjoying a renaissance of popularity and creativity. Its tactility is an antidote to e-life and to slick, impersonal advertising. A little letterpress can make a big difference in a project, providing an unexpected, engaging element.
All letterpress printers used to set metal type by hand, one character at a time. Today, most designers and printers rely on polymer plates, which can be made quickly and economically from negatives of customer-supplied art. This means that virtually every typeface is now available for letterpress. Other elements are easily scanned to create electronic files exactly as you would for an offset job.
Letterpress printing gives any character or image a 3-dimensional aspect, because the ink is pushed into the paper. How visibly it presses into the paper depends on the stock itself as well as on the image being printed.
Lettra's fluffy surface takes a deep impression beautifully. It looks and feels like an art paper, but gets right down to business on press. It is strong and stable, suitable for tip-ons, covers, even inserts in an annual report.
