Only 100 prints available; produced with the historic Jersey Cream wood blocks, cut by Hamilton Manufacturing between 1888-1891

Neenah Paper is excited to release Jersey Cream, the 12 Edition printed for The Beauty of Letterpress. Jim Moran, Museum Director for The Hamilton Wood Type & Printing Museum, produced this very limited, special edition, oversized print. Only 100 prints are available for sale, all proceeds from the $100 purchase price go to help support The Hamilton Wood Type and Printing Museum.

Moran selected the Jersey Cream image for its history and ties to Hamilton. The large, vintage wood blocks were cut over 120 years ago at Hamilton Manufacturing. “It feels amazing to bring images back to life that haven't seen ink for over a century.

As someone who grew up in a commercial shop, the chance to recreate a Hamilton piece of history, using nearly all of the same tools as when it first was impressed, is why I'm a printer. It's like picking up an old instrument and playing a new song,” said Moran.

Moran, a 35-year veteran in letterpress printing, printed the 12 x 19 Jersey Cream prints himself at the Hamilton Factory. He chose to print it on ENVIRONMENT® Papers in Honeycomb RAW™ finish, donated by Neenah, “It prints extremely well in a letterpress application and seemed perfect for a historic image. Honeycomb has a warm tone that seemed ideal for a rural looking print.”

Due to the age of the block, and the uncertainty of its durability, Moran chose to produce only 100 prints. He hopes people will be drawn to the historic value of this image, and its sales will continue to support Hamilton as the museum team works to preserve this time-honored craft. “If a cow doesn't represent our history, what does? Plus, this was a difficult piece to register so it created a great opportunity stretch my printing muscles and make it work,” said Moran

Jersey Cream, is a limited edition 12 x 19 letterpress print. The $100 purchase price goes directly to support The Hamilton Wood Type & Printing Museum. It can be purchased here.

“The Jersey Cream blocks are the oldest pieces we know of in the collection that were made by Hamilton. There is a distinct possibility that we will never be able to print from the original blocks again. The money raised through the sale of these prints will be used to create a humidity/climate-controlled room to house vintage blocks. This endeavor will go a long way in ensuring the protection of these and other historic pieces in our collection,” said Moran.

Since 2012 The Beauty of Letterpress has asked leading designers to interpret “the beauty of letterpress” and has sold thousands of limited edition prints produced by

the country’s leading letterpress printers, including Rohner Letterpress, Studio on Fire, Two Paperdolls, Mama’s Sauce and Genghis Kern. In 2014 the initial project goal of raising $15,000 through sales of the prints was met, which Neenah matched and presented the Hamilton Wood Type & Printing Museum with a check for $30,000. The Beauty of Letterpress continues offer prints to support the museum.
